Breathe, Then Name The Emotion To Tame It

“Wild is The Wind” is a Nina Simone song. It’s like a wild wind blowing everything out of place — dust flying, chaos everywhere, nothing settled. That’s what unchecked emotions feel like: messy, intense, and all over the place. The wild emotion then slips out of the chaos like a thread on a needle, quietly — like it was never even there. Except it was and there must be repair.

Pausing, taking a breath gives a window of reflection. There you can opt to carry on as the wild wind, or to calm your emotion down to a gentle breeze, where the impact is more manageable and maybe even more favourable to you.

The truth is, choices made in the heat of the moment last way longer than that moment. So ask yourself: is this worth my peace later?

Well, you can only truly make the call if you have the insights. Different emotions need to be handled differently. You can’t treat sadness like joy, or joy like anger. Learn to spot what you’re feeling, and how to handle it. Learning the different feelings and how to handle them will help you have the right tools to tame the wild, wild winds.

When you name what you’re feeling, it helps calm the part of your brain that feels stuck and switches on the part that can think clearly and find solutions. This tells your body you’re safe, so your nervous system can chill. Once you’re calm, you’re no longer just reacting — you can think things through and make better choices.

Every version of you—the confident one, the messy one, and even the one who got hurt—lives inside you. Your body and mind remember everything you’ve ever gone through.

But here’s the good news: the version of you reading this right now — that’s the one with the power! This version has access to tools like the Big Sis AI Chatbot. Use these resources to help the younger, hurt versions of you feel safe and heal. What a gift that is!

Do you ever name your emotions? How do you describe them? What words do you use?
