The Architecture of The Nervous System

The nervous system is an incredible network that transports information to and from the body to the brain and vice versa. It is made up primarily of the brain and spinal cord. That is your body’s command centre - think call centre ya Vodacom or MTN.

From birth the nervous system is collecting information. What feels safe? What is not? That's why babies sleep longer when they sleep on or next to mom and wake up the moment she moves. A baby's nervous system knows mom to be safe because the child's nervous system remembers the complete safety of being carried by mom. Even more so if mom breastfeeds.

Every experience is noted. There is a record of every sight, sound, feeling, texture and taste that has ever been encountered. When any of those stimuli make an impact the brain receives the information and sends back an instruction to either release a hormone or perform an action.

If a person is called stupid repeatedly, it fires up the file in the brain where all other similar experiences are stored. Then, the brain sends back the same file for reaction- either releasing the stress hormone cortisol or performing an action like - detachment.

The files that come up constantly as inputted by whatever stimulus are forever replaying the same reaction sequence - like a song on loop. That is the architecture of the nervous system. It builds your life from that loop.

Have you ever stopped to think, is this really my personality or is my nervous system stuck in a loop? Well, just like you can play a different song, you can change the architecture of your nervous system to build a life that feels good to you! How?
