How I Protect My Mental Wellbeing

As someone who is spiritually grounded; one of the most important lessons I have learned is this: I need to fill my own cup first. Whether I’m giving of myself spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, or academically, I can only truly pour into others when I’ve taken care of myself first.

That’s why I take intentional steps to take weekly fasts from social media and social events to reconnect with myself. I spend time in daily prayers and scripture meditation, —it’s healing to have a safe space that reminds you of who you are and grounds you in peace.

I’ve also made it a point to ignore toxicity and negativity. I’ve learned that whatever I give my attention, time and energy to is more likely to linger and repeat itself. So, when I’m faced with uncomfortable or heavy situations, I acknowledge them, learn and move on. I refuse to sit in sadness or surround myself with people or things that bring out the version of me I’m actively healing from. Instead, I choose people who uplift me and seek out activities that make me feel happy, whole, and true to myself.

Another game-changer has been realising that people’s actions toward me often have nothing to do with me. The Bible says, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” That means the way people behave often reflects what’s going on inside them—not necessarily who I am. So I don’t take things too personally anymore. Every challenge or mental battle I face becomes a chance to learn something new about myself. Just like olives are crushed to produce oil, sometimes we are pressed so that something purposeful can come out of us. I’m learning to use that “oil” to grow stronger and wiser.

And lastly, I’ve discovered that the quiet power of being kind is often underestimated. It’s one of the simplest yet most powerful tools for mental wellness. Doing something kind for someone else—whether big or small—always uplifts me too. There’s something special about knowing you've made a difference in someone's day . That kind of joy has a ripple effect, and it can return to you in the most unexpected ways.

These are the practices that help me stay grounded. They remind me that peace isn’t something you stumble upon—it’s something you choose, create, and protect every day.
